Giant Tear Retinal Detachments

A Giant Retinal Tear is a tear that extends more than 1/4th of the way around the retinal. This typically causes very extensive detachment of the retina. For surgeons that don't encounter these frequently, or who use older techniques such as scleral buckling and gas tamponade, these can be very difficult to repair and often have poor visual outcomes. Dr. Rosenthal treats several of these each year, here and in the third world, and uses newer techniques that allow safe, rapid, and almost painless repair usually with excellent visual outcomes.
